Description
Free UPX is an advanced graphical interface for the UPX (Ultimate Packer for eXecutables). It allows you to compress (and decompress) files produced according to Microsoft Portable Executable and COFF Specification (EXE, DLL, OCX, BPL, CPL and other). It offers easy access to all documented and undocumented UPX parameters without the need for command line usage. The Free UPX interface is very simple and user-friendly. To compress executable files, just drag & drop them into main window, select proper profile from list, and click the compress button.
Current version supports 64-bit executable files (Win64/PE), but this feature is declared as experimental.
Review
This free program lets users compress and decompress executable files. Novice users might find its user interface and features a little overwhelming, but more-experienced users will find it to be a valuable compression tool.
At first glance, Free UPX's user interface appears a little cluttered. But once we spent a little time with it, we found it easy to navigate. Using the command buttons at the top of the window, we browsed for, and added, the executable files to be compressed. The layout of the interface flows really well, so we went easily from one step to the next, selecting the output file, compression type, and the force compression. Our files were quickly compressed once we gave it the go-ahead. Decompressing the files was just as easy; we simply added the compressed file, went through the necessary steps, and selected the decompression option.
The program offers help through the publisher's Web site, but we found the page to be extremely cluttered and it was difficult to locate any resources. For that reason, we can't recommend this program for novices. However, experienced users will appreciate its file compression capabilities.
