Shortcat for Mac - The Ultimate Keyboard Shortcut Tool

Are you tired of constantly reaching for your mouse to click on UI elements? Do you want to increase your productivity and speed up your workflow? Look no further than Shortcat for Mac, the ultimate keyboard shortcut tool.

Shortcat is a unique application that enables you to click without using the mouse. This powerful tool is particularly suited to fast typists who want to streamline their workflow and save time. With Shortcat, you can activate any UI element on your screen with just a few keystrokes.

How does it work?

Shortcat works by leveraging the Accessibility API, which is supported by all applications that come with Mac OS X and most applications. When you activate Shortcat with a keyboard shortcut, it will search the current active window (and menu bar) for matching elements based on the letters you type.

For example, if you want to click on a button labeled "Save," simply activate Shortcat with its keyboard shortcut (by default, Command + Shift + Space), type "sav," and hit Enter. Shortcat will automatically find and highlight all UI elements that match those letters in the current window or menu bar. You can then select the desired element by typing its corresponding number or letter.

What are some of its features?

Shortcat comes packed with features designed to make your life easier:

- Customizable keyboard shortcuts: You can customize almost every aspect of Shortcat's behavior, including its activation key combination.

- Smart search: Shortcat uses fuzzy matching algorithms to find UI elements even if they don't match exactly what you typed.

- Multiple selection: If there are multiple matches for what you typed, simply keep typing until only one remains highlighted.

- Integration with other apps: You can use Shortcat in almost any app that supports Accessibility API.

- Support for non-Latin characters: If your app uses non-Latin characters (such as Chinese or Japanese), don't worry – Shortcat supports them too!

Who should use it?

Anyone who wants to increase their productivity should consider using Shortcat. It's particularly useful for:

- Fast typists who want an alternative way of clicking without having to reach for their mouse

- Developers who frequently switch between different windows and apps

- Power users who want more control over their workflow

Review

Constantly having to reach for the mouse might be frustrating for keyboard-proficient users. Shortcat for Mac attempts to replace basic mouse functions by letting you use your keyboard to click UI elements.

The program installs easily and prompts you with a necessary Getting Started screen. It is strongly advised that you read the basic manual if you want to use Shortcat for Mac properly and not miss out on some of its features. Once installed, the program runs in the background and is triggered by a customizable keyboard shortcut. Once activated, a command prompt appears which lets you enter the first letters of the screen element you wish to click. Comprehensive overlays also appear to let you know when the desired element has been selected or if you need to be more precise. The interface is discreet. The biggest issue is that, at the beginning at least, it will surely take more time to effectively click an element with this program than with a trackpad. The program is still in beta and contains some bugs. Most clickable elements don't seem to be recognized every time.

Shortcat for Mac could be interesting only for keyboard-proficient users that are both reluctant to use a trackpad or mouse and are tolerant of bugs. This program is clearly not for the average user as it will prove to bring only marginal productivity improvements over a multitouch trackpad.
