Description

WatchDirectory automatically starts tasks when the directory contents that this program is monitoring changes (a file or directory is added, deleted or changed). You can choose from the following predefined tasks: automatically copy files; automatically sort files based on rules; automatically email when files are created/deleted; automatically delete files; automatically upload (FTP) files (supports proxies, passive mode and secure FTP); automatically create thumbnails for your pictures; automatically generate HTML; automatically generate auditing reports for changed/deleted files (who did it?); automatically compress (ZIP) files; automatically uncompress (unZIP) files; automatically start BAT files (several sample BAT files are included).

Version 4.2.3 is a bug fixing release.

Review

Editor review

WatchDirectory is a digital housekeeper that keeps watch over a specific folder and reacts automatically to changes. It can automatically unzip, upload, or delete files as they are downloaded, or create reports that identify who has changed or deleted files. The software includes some basic scripts designed to delete, move, copy, zip, print, or convert file formats, but you'll need some familiarity with batch (BAT) files or CMD scripts to extend its functionality.

Monitoring options can be set using a graphical interface or command line. In our tests, monitoring did not significantly strain system memory. Overall, WatchDirectory is a reliable program likely to please system administrators, but we wouldn't recommend it for most general computer users.
