Description

Imagine seeing a large amount of text on a Web page, with no way to copy it to the clipboard and subsequently deal with it, as with the text in JavaScript, in a dialog box, or in a picture. With Capture Text, you can select text with the rectangular selection tool and let the program do the rest. In less than a second, Capture Text automatically scans the selected area, recognizes the text, and saves it to the clipboard. Capture Text recognizes letters, punctuation, and numbers. If you select graphics, it translates text as letters and punctuation. It captures and recognizes URLs as well as scanned blocks of text.

Review

Editor review

For a text-recognition utility, Capture Text consumes a surprisingly small amount of computer space and resources. The secret to its efficiency is that it builds its font database from fonts already found on your PC, precluding the need to download additional files. However, we didn't think the interface was very straightforward, and we found no help files, even on the developer's site. Capture Text also didn't work well in our testing, frequently skipping letters. The utility worked with text on sites and in dialog boxes, but it had problems recognizing colored text and couldn't cope with text in Flash animations or PDFs. On the bright side, the program did well when capturing simple screenshots. Nevertheless, we think it needs a lot of improvements to become a valid tool for copying text from any application.
