Fast speed and flawless rendering make this freeware an excellent browser alternative, but its quirks will distract novices.

Out of the box, K-Meleon's interface closely resembles Firefox, and they're both based on the same engine. This browser wins, hands-down, on rendering a page. Pages that bog down in Firefox or that don't fit Internet Explorer's guidelines display quickly and perfectly in K-Meleon. Most users will easily pick up the buttons and commands in this browser. If not, it's easy to apply themes and skins. Plug-ins abound for options left out of the default browser, and most take one or two clicks to install. Thankfully, we found the browser needed nothing added to render the most popular Web sites.

K-Meleon doesn't fit in everywhere, however. Some basic terms are different, such as using "Layers" instead of Tabs. This browser's "Find as your type" search function often failed in multiframed Web sites. Shareware coders and plug-in authors are not as numerous as those on Firefox, leaving K-Meleon updated less often.

Nevertheless, if you need little personalization, and you desire a superfast and accurate freeware browser, this application fits the bill.
