Description

Nice Dice is a dice game that brings new life to the classic game Yahtzee. The game requires you to get dice rolls comparable to poker hands, such as four of a kind, a full house, and a straight. Click a button to roll your dice, save the ones you want to keep, and roll again. Nice Dice lets you tally the results in a single-column Yahtzee game or four-column Yamb game. Choose five or six dice and play alone or in a friendly competition trying to outscore another player. Version 2.5 adds more scoring options and allows submitting your score on an online Hall of Fame and see your name in glory.

Editor review

Despite lackluster graphics and a few missing feaures, NiceDice offers a decent imitation of the popular dice game Yahtzee. We assumed NiceDice's single-player mode would let us compete against the computer, but we were wrong: it only let us play to rack up the highest score. The Quick Launch link gives the rules for each game variation. You can choose classic Yahtzee or Yamb (essentially a multiround Yahtzee) and play either game with five dice or six. The brushed-metal interface is passably attractive, but the other graphics are strictly average (if even that). We like the realistic sound of rolling dice, but you can disable it if it bothers you. The MIDI soundtrack sounds a bit outdated, but again, you can turn it down or off completely. NiceDice may do in a pinch for serious Yahtzee addicts, but less-committed players will probably want to roll the bones somewhere else.
