Description

If Photoshop and PhotoBooth were sampled and remixed by the spirit of Bob Moog, the result would be DotMatrix...Kind an automated AndyWarholBot with you as the factory Superstar. For your G4/G5/Intel Mac running Tiger! Works great with iSight (internal or external), also with MiniDV firewire cameras, but does not require camera - use pictures from your mobile phone. Add a paid license and use the output of DotMatrix as your camera input for Skype, Yahoo Messenger, and PhotoBooth. It's like having video chat in 1977. Retro and futuristic.

DotMatrix for Mac allows you to mash up a number of classic styles and layouts when taking photos with your Mac's Webcam. The result is a number of very fun, very cool-looking images that can be saved and shared later or used within the app, depending on if you have the free or paid license. While the interface is a bit intimidating, at first, everything you'll need is on one screen, ultimately making it an almost mobile-style desktop app, which is a good thing.

When you install DotMatrix, your Webcam will activate and show your face onscreen with whatever active filter you've selected. There is a drop-down menu below the camera input with more than two dozen options including things like '70s TV, '60s one sheet, and orange and green feedback. The results look very good and because it's on the Webcam you can see yourself in action at any time. Tap the photo button to snap a still frame or adjust the colors and matrix settings on the left before taking a photo. The interface is very smooth and allows you to easily set up and snap photos in a number of different layouts with the tap of a button.

If you enjoy photo filtering apps for your mobile device and always wished you could do the same on your Mac, then DotMatrix is a great app that allows you to do just that. With numerous options for filtering and outputting images, you can have a lot of fun here. The app is free, but with the paid upgrade you can use the video output from DotMatrix in your Skype messaging -- a very cool upgrade option.
