Description
Enhancements to the certificate viewer (file export, PEM format view). Adds two options to the certificate viewer in Firefox: an X.509 certificate can either be displayed in PEM format (Base64/RFC 1421, opens in a new window) or saved to a file (in PEM or DER format - and PKCS#7 provided that the respective patch has been applied - cf.
Additionally, an entry for direct access to the certificate manager will appear in the Tools menu (including a keyboard shortcut).
Review
The Firefox certificate manager displays data about your security certificates. Cert Viewer Plus is a free Firefox add-on that enhances the certificate manager with the ability to display PEM file data. It also adds a direct link to the certificate manager from the Tools menu as well as a keyboard shortcut.
Cert Viewer Plus installs normally. We opened the add-ons manager in Firefox, accessed Cert Viewer's page, and clicked Options. The add-on's options are minimal and involve configuring the PEM window view. The page also contained some useful information about the add-on, a Wen link, and a screenshot. While we were on the Tools menu, we noticed a new entry, Certificate Manager. Clicking this opened the certificate manager directly instead of requiring us to click Tools, access the Options dialog, click Advanced, select the Encryption tab, and click View Certificates. In the certificate manager, we clicked the Authorities tab, selected a certificate, and clicked View. The certificate's properties sheet showed a new button, View PEM. We clicked it, and a text view of the data source opened. We could edit, save, or print the data.
Cert Viewer Plus adds a useful capability to Firefox, though obviously it's going to be more useful to the more advanced user. But that's why Firefox is so popular: it's easy to customize it to suit the needs and skills of any user. If you regularly access the certificate manager, we bet you'll like Cert Viewer Plus.
