You start by defining a pattern suitable for your data. Then by applying the pattern to the data you create the graphic. There are many possibilities to reconfigure the graphic so as to get the display you need, the one which is most clear and meaningful for you.
With your data presented as a objects linked by arrows representing numerical values you can also discover the longest and shortest paths between two objects.
