When is Fathers Day? The rule of thumb is that Fathers Day falls on the third Sunday of June, meaning the actual date changes annually. This is the US calculation, so some countries around the world opt for different times of year. Why do we celebrate it? Fathers Day is generally believed to have been inaugurated in 1908, by a West Virginian woman who missed her own dad. Grace Clayton had lost her father several years before, but was roused to act by an incident that would shake her town for generations. The 1907 Monogah Mining Disaster left a thousand children fatherless, when an accidental explosion killed 250 fathers and 367 men. Inspired by the US first Mothers Day earlier that year, Clayton encouraged her pastor - Reverend Robert Thomas Webb - to dedicate a special service to the victims of Monogah. It was July 5, the closest Sunday to her own fathers birthday. So Fathers Day was not originally a day of breakfast in bed and greetings cards. It was a dedication to unforgotten fathers, and a memorial to the tragic loss of mens lives.
