Review

Editor review

Alternote for Mac connects to your Evernote account to enable you to access and interact with your notes. The app comes free of charge and features a lightweight and elegant interface that is intuitive. Alternote offers some standard text formatting features as well as the ability to read in a distraction-free environment. There is also an option that makes it easier to read at night.

Pros

Evernote integration: Alternote for Mac is tightly integrated with Evernote and allows you to view and edit all of your notebooks, tags, starred, and regular notes. The sync is completely automatic and transparent but can also be initiated manually. During the Evernote log-in process you can specify how long the software should have access to your notes. The options range from one day to 10 years.

Offline access: Despite its reliance on Evernote -- an online service -- the app allows you to view and edit your notes, even when you have no Internet connection. Syncing resumes like normal the next time you use the app.

Two display modes and distraction-free reading: The app comes with a couple of handy features. The first is the choice between a dark (night) and a bright (day) theme. The other option hides the notebook and notes panels, allowing you to concentrate on the open note. If you use this option in conjunction with OS X's full screen mode, it makes for a great distraction-free reading experience.

Cons

Evernote credentials required: From the moment you first open the app you're asked for your Evernote name and password, and there's no way to proceed before giving this information or creating a new Evernote account. While syncing your notes to the cloud certainly has its merits, you should also have the option to keep your data completely private and local.

Bottom Line

If you use Evernote to store all of your notes, to-do lists, and reminders, Alternote for Mac might prove to be a great Evernote client for you. Thanks to its handy features, like night mode and distraction-free reading, it can serve as a good replacement for the official Evernote for Mac app. If you've never used Evernote before and don't plan on doing so, you won't be able to use this app and should look for an alternative.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Alternote for Mac 1.0.
