Description

DesktopLyrics is an application that displays the lyrics of the song currently playing in "iTunes" right on your Mac desktop. DesktopLyrics features numerous options to customize lyrics display to your liking. DesktopLyrics does not only display the lyrics but can also display the information about the current song (e.g. title) in a customizable manner. Additionally, you can opt to display the artwork of the song too.

DesktopLyrics allows you to define the font, size, color and shadows for the lyrics and for the song-information separately, so that the lyrics exactly match your taste and desktop picture. Long lyrics that can't be displayed at once are automatically cut into multiple "pages". You can turn the pages with small buttons embedded into the lyrics display, turn them with hot-key combinations or just have them turned automatically. There is an advanced option for defining the time-code of the page turning. DesktopLyrics features options to share the current lyrics with your friends by e-mail or by posting them to FaceBook or Twitter. You can also copy them to the clipboard or printing the lyrics. In addition to the exhaustive settings to customize the lyrics appearance, DesktopLyrics also features a host of options to change its behavior to be as practical as possible. You can display DesktopLyrics in the menubar instead of the Dock, use hot-key combinations to operate it, or change the behavior in case iTunes is paused or the lyrics are empty.

Review

Editor review

A light iTunes utility, DesktopLyrics for Mac makes it easy for you to sing along with the lines of songs you listen to on iTunes. It's not quite a karaoke machine replacement, but it's a good little app that can help you memorize lyrics and avoid the embarrassment of singing misheard lines.

Pros

Customizable lyrics and song information: With DesktopLyrics for Mac you can adjust the font size, color, and shadows of the lyrics. You can also display the album art as well as details about the currently playing track.

Multiple page display: If you have lyrics that are too long to be shown in just one page, they will be shown in multiple, customizable pages. You can set the timing to match the track's position, and also use hot keys to make the multiple-page lyrics move at your command.

Lyric sharing: You can quickly share lyrics through email or by posting them on Twitter or Facebook.

Cons

Lyrics have to be set on iTunes: DesktopLyrics does not display lyrics if they are not set on iTunes. You can't use it to search for lyrics to be associated with a song on iTunes.

No direct drag-and-drop lyrics placement: You can adjust indentations (in pixels) or drag a representation of the lyrics position on a tiny screen. Once you've set these, you can no longer modify the lyrics placement on the actual DesktopLyrics window.

Works only with iTunes: This app isn't an option if you prefer another music player.

Bottom Line

If you need a light application that can show lyrics on your desktop as songs play in iTunes, DesktopLyrics for Mac can be a decent enough option. It's quick and easy to use and, though you can't have crawling or line-by-line lyrics on your desktop, you do get a legible lyrics window.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of DesktopLyrics for Mac 2.6.1.
