That is important information because in order to collect a dividend, you have to own the stock when the market opens on it's ex-dividend day. You can then choose to invest in one or more stocks the day before the ex-dividend date and then sell your shares on the following day. You will still get the dividend because you owned the stock when the market opened on the ex-date.
