Kik Messenger is the totally free, crazy-fast, cross-platform messenger app that connects you to your friends in real-time. You'll like its functionality but not the rather tedious account creation process.
Pros
Free but feature-rich: A cross-platform app, Kik Messenger offers all the chatting features you'd expect and allows you to share photos, sketches, and Web pages. Its smooth performance and small file size make it a good choice for older iPhones.
Message statuses: The app informs you whether a message has already been delivered (indicated by the letter D on top of a check mark) or read (R on top of a check mark). Messages can also be sent while the recipient is offline.
Built-in Web browser: The app's basic browser works well enough and even has Favorites, but don't expect to run Java or Flash elements on it.
Cons
Relatively complicated account creation: Compared to the straightforward process of creating an account offered by most mobile messengers, this app's registration process seems old school, requiring a username, display name, and password. If you've become accustomed to validation-code-and-phone-number-based account creation, you may find this app's sign-up process somewhat tedious, especially if all the usernames you're trying to use are already taken.
