Description
In this epic fantasy role-playing game, you have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again. Begin a quest to escape and to gain revenge on the cruel empire that put you there. Avernum is an old-school, fantasy, role-playing game designed for anyone who longs for a huge adventure, enjoys a fascinating tale, or misses the classic days of Ultima and Wizardry. It features beautiful 3D, 16-bit graphics, 80 towns and dungeon levels, an enormous outdoors, and a fascinating story line. Avernum is from Spiderweb Software, makers of Nethergate and the award-winning Exile series.
Review
An engaging and challenging role-playing game, Avernum is not without its flaws. The installation is relatively fast and you soon find yourself in a big maze. You control four characters that were banished to the underworld, and you must escape using brains, brawn, and magic. The default resolution for the game will render your heroes too small to be seen, much less maneuvered. The detailed, ever-present tutorial is handy, however; no hero makes a single senseless move without getting a special warning. If you aren't already a fan of role-playing games, your patience may be tested by the amount of time spent walking and wandering in exploration. However, the game is ultimately immersive and really puts you into the world of heroes, might, magic, and power. Avernum will appeal to existing RPG fans as well as beginners with a willingness to learn the workings of this world.
