Description

Those who build programs or desktop themes will never have enough glyphs and icons. Only this explains why some still download these huge icon collections. With Icon Extractor you can create a starting place for your own icons by extracting all icons from a your EXE or DLL's file. Icon Filter then stores the files as ICOs or CURs, or it converts to a BMP file. For quickly getting your own icon collection, you may choose to extract all icons from the EXE or DLL files in the Windows directory with one mouse click. If you decide to produce BMP icons you can also generate a HTML gallery to view those images.

Review

Editor review

Although its interface is clunky, this free application does a sufficiently speedy job of extracting icons from executable or BMP files. IconFilter allows you to browse a file directory from its main program window, select files, and save them in either ICO, CUR, or BMP formats. If needed, you also can create a Web page with images. Yet during testing we couldn't see how this feature was useful, as BMP images are too heavy for Web publishing. Some drawbacks include the program's inability to save in either GIF or JPEG formats, and limited color options allow you to save only in 8 bit or 24 bit. Extracted icons can't be resized or edited. Users looking for a tool on a budget may find this limited yet useful program handy, yet for bigger tasks IconFilter may not stand up to the challenge.
