Description

In the last ten years astronomers have discovered over 150 planets beyond our own solar system. But sadly, with today's technology there are no direct images of these distant worlds. Planet Quest is our artistic vision of what these worlds might look like. Join us as we marvel at the infinity of creation - using the awesome power of your PC to create an infinity of worlds to enjoy and to marvel at, in stunning 3D. And, of course you'll see nebulae, galaxies, stars, suns, comets, asteroids, moons, planetary rings and even the occasional supernova in these unique and believable scenes. Flexible music playback options are included, as well as our original theme music. Planet Quest is also suitable for laptop users, providing a special "low power" mode when the battery is in use. Please note that Planet Quest never repeats a scene, and yet does not require advanced graphics hardware. So dim the lights and get yourself into the mood for some extrasolar discoveries!

Version 4.0 adds asteroids and laptop low-power mode, improved visuals, resource usage, error handling, and performance.

Editor review

Zoom through the galaxy with Planet Quest, a 3D screensaver that carries you past asteroids, glowing stars, cloud-shrouded planets, and rings of cosmic debris. Though a bit dated, the celestial graphics still look lovely, and you can take screenshots to capture the most beautiful scenes. We like the way Planet Quest crossfades from the desktop into deep space. The soothing, well-recorded New Age theme music is perfectly suited to the mood, and you can supply your own audio file if you want some variety. The control panel has options for displaying frame rate and time, enabling monitor power saving, and controlling the crossfade time between scenes (unfortunately, the current scene freezes as you transition to the next one). The latest version has a text-only mode for laptops on battery power. In our tests, this screensaver worked all right with a low-end graphics card, but owners of premium cards may find the 3D effects cause their GPU fans to ramp up. That's not a criticism, just fair warning. Planet Quest gives space-adventure fans plenty to like.
