Description
K1 is a system utility for Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server. It retrieves a detailed list about your operating system and hardware informations. K1 has also some options to manage your computer: shutdown, reboot, hibernate, stand by, log-off, or lock computer; manage services; change Windows elements color; manage processes; back up NT drivers; registry tweaker (optimize registry and services); KCleaner (delete cookies, temporary Internet files, recent documents, empty recycle bin, typed URLs from the adress bar of IE, Windows temporary files, and clean Prefetch folder); password generator; shortcut maker; 'Quick-Launch' accessible from the systray; manage screensaver; turn off monitor; show/hide Windows's elements (systray, traywnd, start up button, desktop); disconnect from Internet. Lastly you can save or send by e-mail informations retrieved by K1 and save K1's screen shots.
Version 1.0.6 adds new information about system and hardware, fixes a serious startup crash, and adds some general code and interface iprovements.
Review
This multipurpose utility generates profiles of your computer hardware and software and offers various system tweaking tools, but crashes often. K1's straightforward interface displays a tree listing of 19 hardware areas of your system. The program doesn't gather the information very quickly, but the wait is acceptable. The results tree lists hardware details including operating system, CPU, motherboard, and hard drive. From some file headers you can open additional information such as Windows updates, running processes, installed software, Windows Services, and drivers. In our tests, the program often crashed when opening some file headers or when generating a report. K1 does include numerous helpful features to manage processes and services and uninstall programs. A trace-cleaning utility removes Recent Documents history, Windows and Internet temporary files, cookies, and Internet history, but it only supports IE users. The built-in optimizer is designed to make your system perform faster, but our tests found little improvement. Even with the frequent crashes and minor annoyances, this freeware will be a useful addition to any technician's toolbox.
