Description
The Intel Microcode Boot Loader is a security software designed to protect your computer from the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities that were discovered in early 2018. These vulnerabilities allow speculative execution side-channel attacks, which can compromise the security of your system.
Meltdown was resolved with an OS patch, but Spectre required a microcode update. The microcode is stored and automatically loaded by the BIOS/UEFI, but motherboard manufacturers only release firmware updates for their newest products. This leaves many older motherboards vulnerable to these attacks.
The Intel Microcode Boot Loader provides a workaround for this problem on Intel-based motherboards. It updates the microcode every time the system is booted, ensuring that your system remains protected from security vulnerabilities, bugs and erratas.
