Description
WidgetRunner is a free, open source application that allows you to run dashboard widgets on your desktop, and control whether they float above or behind all applications. WidgetRunner currently works with most Apple-supplied widgets, including Weather, Calculator, iTunes, World Clock, Stocks, and many others. However, some widgets do not work. Please send me feedback with widgets you would most like to see supported, or consider helping develop WidgetRunner. The source code for the program is hosted on Google Code: http://code.google.com/p/widgetrunner/
Review
WidgetRunner for Mac provides a quick way for you to move Dashboard widgets to the desktop area. If you find that using Mac widgets on the Dashboard takes too many clicks, you will appreciate the convenience of this app. While it includes only a handful of options, the application runs smoothly and effectively.
Even though WidgetRunner has no real interface, it's still really easy to operate. All you need to do is launch the application and import widgets into the app from your Mac Library by selecting "New Widget" from the application menu bar. Once imported and selected, widgets automatically appear on the desktop on top of all other windows. You can hide the widgets behind the windows if you want to, using a basic keyboard combination. Many widgets can be run simultaneously, and you can easily remove any with just a right-click on the widget. All native and some custom-installed Mac widgets we had on our test machine worked flawlessly with this app. However, the developer states that there is a possibility that some custom-installed widgets you have may not work. In such a case, you are free to send feedback to the developer.
With its responsive controls and smooth desktop integration, WidgetRunner is the right choice for you if you want to use widgets in your Mac's desktop area rather than in the Dashboard. It's a clean and functional app that doesn't come with any noticeable glitches.
